Holi Skincare Guide: How to Protect and Recover Your Skin During the Festival of Colours

Holi is one of the most joyful festivals in India — and one of the most challenging for skin. Synthetic colours, prolonged water exposure, and harsh scrubbing during colour removal can leave skin dry, irritated, and damaged. With the right preparation and aftercare, you can enjoy Holi fully without compromising your skin health. Here’s the complete Holi skincare guide.
Before Holi: The Protective Layer
The most important Holi skincare step happens before you step outside. Creating a barrier between synthetic colours and your skin dramatically reduces staining, irritation, and post-Holi skin damage.
Apply a generous layer of coconut oil or a thick moisturiser to all exposed skin — face, neck, arms, legs. This creates a physical barrier that prevents colour from directly contacting your skin and makes removal significantly easier.
Apply SPF 50 over your moisturiser — Holi typically happens outdoors during peak UV hours. Sun protection is essential even on a day full of colour.
Apply lip balm generously: Lips absorb colour easily and are directly exposed during Holi. A thick layer of lip balm prevents staining and protects the delicate lip skin.
During Holi: What to Keep in Mind
Avoid rubbing your eyes — synthetic colours cause significant eye irritation. Wear sunglasses if possible. Keep your mouth closed during colour throwing. If you experience any burning sensation from colours, rinse that area with clean water immediately rather than rubbing.
After Holi: Colour Removal Without Damage
This is where most skin damage happens — scrubbing aggressively to remove colour. Aggressive scrubbing causes micro-tears, spreads any chemical irritants further, and causes post-inflammatory pigmentation on Indian skin.
The right method: Apply oil (coconut or your face oil) to dry skin and massage gently for 2–3 minutes. The oil dissolves colour without the need for scrubbing. Then use your foaming cleanser to remove the oil and remaining colour. Repeat once if needed.
Some staining from synthetic colours is normal and will fade in 2–3 days with regular cleansing. Don’t aggressively scrub to remove it — the micro-damage from scrubbing will take longer to heal than the stain takes to fade naturally.
Post-Holi Recovery Routine
After colour removal: apply your Niacinamide serum (anti-inflammatory, helps any irritation settle), followed by a generous layer of ceramide moisturiser to repair the barrier. Skip exfoliants for 3–5 days post-Holi. Resume your normal routine once skin feels settled.
