Sunscreen Myths Busted: What Most Indians Get Wrong About SPF

Sunscreen is the single most evidence-backed skincare product that exists. Yet it’s also the most misunderstood. Myths about sunscreen are so widespread in India that they’re actively preventing millions of people from protecting their skin properly. Let’s bust the most common ones.
Myth 1: “Dark skin doesn’t need sunscreen”
This is perhaps the most damaging myth. While darker skin tones do have more melanin (which offers some natural UV protection — roughly equivalent to SPF 13), this is nowhere near sufficient protection. Dark-skinned Indians are equally prone to UV-triggered hyperpigmentation, melasma, and premature ageing. In fact, dark spots are more visible and longer-lasting on darker skin tones — making sunscreen even more important.
Myth 2: “I only need sunscreen when it’s sunny”
UV rays penetrate cloud cover. Up to 80% of UVA rays pass through clouds. UVA rays (responsible for ageing and pigmentation) are present at consistent levels throughout the year and throughout the day — even in winter, even indoors near windows. The weather is irrelevant to your UV exposure.
Myth 3: “SPF in my foundation is enough”
To get the SPF value stated on a foundation, you’d need to apply 7x more product than the average person uses. In practice, SPF-infused makeup provides about SPF 2–3 of real protection. It’s completely insufficient as your only sun protection.
Myth 4: “Sunscreen causes acne and whiteheads”
This is true of heavy, poorly formulated sunscreens — but not of modern lightweight sunscreens. If your sunscreen is breaking you out, the issue is your sunscreen formula, not sunscreen in general. Lightweight, non-comedogenic, non-greasy formulas are specifically designed for oily and acne-prone skin and won’t clog pores.
The fix: Find a sunscreen that’s non-comedogenic and lightweight enough that you actually enjoy wearing it daily. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use consistently.
Myth 5: “One application in the morning lasts all day”
Sunscreen breaks down with UV exposure, sweat, and touch. Most sunscreens last 2–3 hours under real-world conditions. If you’re outdoors, active, or sweating, you need to reapply. A single morning application provides diminishing protection throughout the day.
