Sunscreen Reapplication: Why Once a Day Isn’t Enough in India
You apply sunscreen every morning. But are you reapplying it? Most Indians aren’t — and this single gap in routine is responsible for a significant portion of the UV damage, tanning, and pigmentation that occurs despite “using SPF daily.” Here’s everything you need to know about sunscreen reapplication for Indian conditions.
Why Sunscreen Wears Off
Sunscreen — both chemical and physical — degrades with UV exposure, sweat, sebum, and touch. In Indian conditions with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C, this degradation happens faster. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV energy and convert it to heat — after enough UV exposure, the active molecules are exhausted. Physical sunscreens scatter UV light but get physically removed by sweat and touch.
The standard recommendation is reapplication every 2 hours of UV exposure. In Indian summer conditions, some experts recommend every 90 minutes for extended outdoor activity.
How to Reapply Without Disturbing Makeup
The biggest barrier to reapplication for working Indians is wearing makeup. Here’s the practical solution:
SPF setting sprays: Spray over makeup and pat gently. Not as effective as a full application but significantly better than no reapplication.
SPF powder: Brush over makeup. Provides meaningful UVB protection and doesn’t disturb foundation or concealer.
On no-makeup days: Full reapplication of your regular SPF. Apply the same amount as your morning application — don’t apply less because you already “have some on.”
When Reapplication Matters Most
- Outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM (peak UV hours in India)
- After swimming, heavy sweating, or wiping face
- During outdoor sports or travel
- On days with UV Index 8+ (most Indian summer days)
When You Can Skip Reapplication
If you’re entirely indoors away from windows, reapplication is less critical. One morning application is generally sufficient for indoor days. But near windows or with outdoor exposure of any kind, reapplication matters.
