Why Indian Skin Needs Different Skincare Than Western Products

Why Indian skin needs different skincare

Most of the skincare products dominating the market — and most skincare advice on the internet — is created for Western skin types and climates. European and American skincare brands formulate for cool, dry climates and lighter skin tones. Yet Indians spend crores every year on these products and wonder why they don’t get the same results they see in international reviews.

The truth is that Indian skin is biologically and environmentally different — and it needs a different approach.

1. Indian Skin Has Higher Melanin Levels

Indian skin (Fitzpatrick types III–V) has more active melanocytes than lighter skin tones. This gives us natural UV protection but also means we’re far more prone to hyperpigmentation, post-inflammatory dark marks, and uneven skin tone. Ingredients that work for dark spot correction on Western skin may be too weak for Indian skin — we need higher concentrations of actives like Niacinamide, Alpha Arbutin, and Kojic Acid.

2. India’s Climate Is Harsh on Skin

India has extreme heat, high humidity, intense UV radiation, and high pollution levels — often all at the same time. A moisturiser designed for a European winter is going to be far too heavy for an Indian summer. Sunscreens formulated for mild UV environments won’t provide adequate protection against India’s UV Index of 8–11+. Lightweight, non-greasy formulas that can withstand heat and humidity are essential.

3. Oiliness Is Far More Common in Indian Skin

Heat and humidity cause increased sebum production. Most Western skincare routines don’t account for the level of oiliness that’s completely normal in Indian climates. Heavy creams, occlusive moisturisers, and thick serums that work in London or New York will clog pores and cause breakouts in Mumbai or Hyderabad.

4. Pollution Damage Is a Real Daily Concern

Indian cities consistently rank among the most polluted in the world. Particulate matter (PM2.5) penetrates your skin barrier, generates free radicals, accelerates ageing, and worsens pigmentation. Antioxidant ingredients like Vitamin C in your cleanser and serum provide daily protection that Western routines don’t always prioritise.

The solution: Use skincare specifically formulated for Indian skin conditions — lightweight textures, higher active concentrations, strong UV protection, and antioxidant-rich formulas.
