Winter Skincare Routine for Indian Skin: What Changes and What Doesn’t

Winter skincare routine India

Indian winters are milder than European ones, but they still significantly change what your skin needs. The drop in humidity — even in South Indian cities — causes more moisture loss from skin. In North India, the combination of cold air, heaters, and pollution spikes makes winter particularly rough on skin. Here’s how to adapt your routine.

How Winter Changes Your Skin

Lower humidity means skin loses water more quickly (trans-epidermal water loss increases). Even oily skin can become dry, flaky, and tight during Indian winters — especially in Delhi, Pune, and Bangalore where humidity drops significantly. Your summer routine focused on oil control may leave skin feeling stripped and uncomfortable.

Switch to a Gentler Cleanser

If you were using a strong acne-focused cleanser in summer, switch to a gentler foaming formula in winter. The goal is still to cleanse effectively, but with less stripping. Look for a cleanser with hydrating actives like Hyaluronic Acid alongside cleansing agents.

Layer Your Hydration

In winter, apply your serum on damp skin and follow immediately with moisturiser — don’t wait for the serum to dry fully. This “sandwiching” technique locks in significantly more moisture. You may also want to use a slightly more generous amount of moisturiser than in summer.

Winter tip: Apply moisturiser within 60 seconds of washing your face while skin is still damp. This dramatically improves moisture retention compared to applying on dry skin.

Don’t Reduce Your SPF

Many people drop sunscreen in winter because it doesn’t feel as urgent. But UVA rays — responsible for pigmentation and ageing — are present year-round at almost the same intensity. Winter sun at lower angles can actually cause more direct UV exposure. Keep SPF 50 PA+++ every morning without exception.

Add Lip Care to Your Routine

Lips lose moisture faster than any other part of your face in dry winter air. Apply lip balm before sleeping and reapply throughout the day. A lip balm with SPF provides both sun protection and deep moisturising — ideal for Indian winters where UV exposure is still significant.
